Commish says no replacement:
Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher, Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner
“When Samford University entered the Ohio Valley Conference almost four years ago, it did so as an acquaintance. When the institution departs in another year, its student-athletes, coaches and administrators will leave as valued competitors, colleagues and friends.
“I am disappointed that Samford University has made this decision. I am resolute in my belief that Samford could achieve any of its goals – athletically or institutionally – as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. However, I understand the institution’s desire to be associated with other private institutions. Samford will depart a fine conference to join another fine conference. My office and member institutions of the Ohio Valley Conference will enjoy one more year with Samford and then we will wish the institution well as it moves in another direction.
“The departure of Samford does not threaten the stability of our league, nor weaken the league. While the membership will always consider potential institutions that could enhance the Conference, there is no urgency or necessity to find another member institution.”
The Ohio Valley Conference, which enters its 60th year of competition in 2007-08, will be comprised of 10 schools following the departure of Samford, which joined the OVC in 2003-04. Member institutions include Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Eastern Kentucky University, Jacksonville State University, Morehead State University, Murray State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin.
